Phelps was selected from nearly 65 nominations by a panel of independent judges. The award was presented on June 22, 2006 at a gala event at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

The overall national Entrepreneur Of The Year award recipient is then considered for the world event held in Monte Carlo.
